The Journey into Massage Therapy

I grew up in the small town of Tenino WA, and graduated from Tenino High School. Amid school held job fairs and job shadows, I never found myself drawn to any certain profession.

During my junior year of high school, a family member was in a car accident causing her the inability to move her head. She was fighting the insurance to pay for treatments, which took months, all the while unable to look left, right, or shake her head yes or no. She asked me to “Just push on it, rub it, anything. I need relief!” yet I had no idea what I was doing, or if it was helping.

I massaged her for a while and then she asked me to stop. To see if the massage helped, she moved her head around and then exclaimed “That was like magic.”

My aunt was able to look around for the first time in months!

After a lot of back-and-forth conversations with my aunt she mentioned that I should look into massage training and work with injury patients, because she felt such relief after I worked on her. She was impressed with me and stated “with little to no knowledge of massage itself, imagine what you could do after you learned it!”

That is the moment I decided I wanted to become a licensed massage therapist.

Onward and Upward

I searched for a nearby college that offered massage courses and I decided to begin my massage journey at Clover Park Technical College. Although the school was far from where I lived at the time, among dealing with other battles, I persevered and graduated. After graduation I took a step back from massage to start a family, and a year and a half later I was ready to puy my knowledge of healing to good use.

My favorite part of massage is knowing I am aiding the healing process for those who have lived with pain for far too long. I enjoy working in the medical field and providing my specialty of service to different injuries incurred from car accidents, work injuries, or simply by life. I love being able to help people heal, allowing them the ability to live their lives more comfortably.

Some people misjudge me for being small, yet as my massage instructor always said “You might be small but you are mighty”
